“Piolet d’Or” is the most prestigious mountaineering award ¬– it is a kind of Oscar prize in climbing society. The prize is awarded to strongest climbing teams, whose achievements are proved best in a year. Four times during it 14-years history Piolet d’Or was awarded to Russian climber. First time it was a team from Yekaterinburg leaded by Sergey Efimov who got it for the climb of the West Face of Makalu. Valery Babanov is the only mountaineer in the history of Piolet d’Or, who took the prize twice. For the first time he was awarded it (it was Piolet d’Or–2002) for his impressive solo climb of Meru The Central (Himalayas). For the second – for an awe-inspiring first-climb of Nuptse The East (Himalayas, 7804 m) in 2003 in a duo with Yuri Koshelenko. And the last `Piolet d’Or’ was awarded to a team from Saint-Petersburg leaded by Alexander Odintsov for their climb of the North Face of Jannu. So Russia keeps Piolet d’Or during two last years what is an obvious success of Russian climbing.
