Famous book ‘The Climb’ written by Anatoli Boukreev and Weston de Walt was translated to Russian and published by BASK company.
‘Mountains have the power to call us into their realms
And there, left forever, are our friends
Whose great souls were longing for the heights.
Do not forget the mountaineers
Who have not returned from the summits.’
That is the inscription Anatoli Boukreev wrote on the title page of the book that he presented to Vladimir and Sergey Bogdanov -– general directors of BASK. That, English, version of the book was published by Martin Press in New York in 1997.
Anatoli Boukreev is a renowned high-altitude climber, world-famous with his improbable speed climbs performed without supplementary oxygen and his outstanding physical and psychological endurance. He was a friend of our company and used to call to us to share his plans and just to chat with his comrades.
A month had not passed after that visit of Anatoli to BASK, when he was killed in an avalanche at Annapurna…
In memory of our dear friends Anatoli Boukreev and Vladimir Bashkirov who both were killed in high mountains, we have translated ‘The Climb’ to Russian and completed it with memoirs of their Russian colleagues and friends.
The book is devoted to Everest-96 tragedy where Anatoli was one of the main heroes. Written in cooperation with American journalist and writer Weston de Walt, the book presents a tragic panorama of dramatic events developed on Everest slopes in a spring season of year 1996. It is a sorrowful story of struggle for life in a terrible storm and blizzard that raved against the group of climbers on the highest world summit. Five lives were lost there and the salvation of the others was uncertain till the last minute. ‘The Climb’ reveals underlying causes of the tragedy and presents exact chronology of the events together with vivid impressions of those who survived. Extraordinary rescue operation performed by Anatoli Boukreev by his own in that drastic conditions has no analogues in world mountaineering history.
The edition of “The Climb” besides of Russian text translated from English original by Petr Sergeev, includes a number of colour photos, maps and schemes created especially for Russian version of the book.
