This central international festival of mountain films took place on 31st of Octobet – 3rd of November in Banff, Canada. 263 films from 31 countries had participated at the Festival, while 144 of them were made by American and Canadian producers. It’s remarkable that this time four Russian films were competing at the festival. Among them were `Russian 8000-er’ by Eu. Jidkov and V. Kozlov (Moscow) and `Russian Extreme Project’ by Valery Rozov.
Banff Festival is the main event of mountaineering media industry of USA and Canada, like Trento festival in Europe. This is really a festival of mountain and outdoor cinematography, which has its counterpart in Russia – Moscow International `Vertical’ Festival, which became very popular now. One more film festival devoted to outdoor and extreme adventures – `Gran’ (Face) was introduced in Russian capital recently.
It’s nice to see that Moscow and Banff festivals have a lot in common. For example, last fall the first prize in `adventure literature’ nomination of `Gran’ festival was copped by authors of `The Climb’ – Weston de Walt and Anatoly Boukreev (posthumously). While at the same time `Above the clouds’ book of memoirs about Boukreev written by Linda Wylie was rewarded as the best mountaineering book at Banff-2002 festival.
